Hourglass: An Elegant Handwritten Font for Refined Branding

I’d been staring at the blank brand board for a good ten minutes. The project was a new skincare line, and while the client had a clear vision for minimalist, organic aesthetics, the mood board felt a little… cold. The core sans-serif I’d chosen was perfect for clarity, but it lacked a touch of humanity, a bit of grace. That’s when I decided to test a new script font, Hourglass, in the logo mockup. I typed the brand name into Illustrator and watched it transform.

The Immediate Charm of Hourglass

Hourglass isn’t overly whimsical or dramatic. Its appeal lies in its controlled elegance. The strokes flow with a natural rhythm, but each character is beautifully balanced. It feels modern—not antique or overly formal—but it carries a sophisticated character that immediately elevates any text it touches. For that skincare brand, the flowing letters added a sense of personal care and artistry, suggesting hand-crafted quality without shouting it. It was exactly the accent the identity needed.

A Practical Look at Its Design Personality

In practice, Hourglass works because it’s charming without being childish. The ascenders and descenders are graceful, and the letterforms have a lovely consistency that makes them feel like a cohesive set, not just random handwritten scribbles. This is crucial for branding. You need a script font that can be repeated across materials and still feel reliable. The personality here is refined, approachable, and quietly confident. It exudes a premium feel, making it ideal for businesses that want to communicate quality and personal touch—think boutique shops, creative studios, local cafés, or product-based businesses like the skincare line I was working on.

From Mockup to Real-World Application

Once the logo draft felt right, I started applying Hourglass across the initial brand materials. Its primary role was as a display font.

This font isn’t designed for long paragraphs of body text—its detailed strokes are best appreciated at larger sizes. But for short-form text, like taglines, quotes, or special offers, it performs wonderfully, adding personality without sacrificing readability.

Building a Cohesive Visual System

A key part of the process was pairing Hourglass with other typefaces. I paired it with a clean, geometric sans-serif for all body text and informational copy. The contrast was perfect: the sans-serif provided the stable, modern foundation, and Hourglass provided the elegant flourish. This pairing created a clear visual hierarchy. Clients and customers intuitively understood what was important and decorative versus what was informative and functional. For a different project, like a wedding invitation suite, pairing Hourglass with a classic serif could yield a more traditional, yet still modern, elegance.

Testing and Practical Considerations

Before committing to any font for a full brand system, I test it in real scenarios. For Hourglass, I printed it on a simulated business card and a small label sticker. Seeing it at actual size confirmed its readability and impact. I also checked its performance in various file formats and ensured it had the necessary multilingual support for the client’s target markets. For commercial work, verifying the licensing is always a must—knowing you have the proper rights for branding, packaging, and digital templates is fundamental.

Practical advice? Always look at the glyph set. Hourglass’s graceful, flowing strokes often include lovely alternates and ligatures that can add even more customization to a logo or headline, allowing you to tweak a character to better fit the space or feel of a word.

The Effect on Brand Perception

Using Hourglass strategically across the skincare brand’s assets did more than just make things look pretty. It affected the brand’s perceived value. The elegant script suggested care, attention to detail, and a human touch behind the products. It made the brand feel less like a corporation and more like a passionate creator. This subtle shift in perception is powerful for audience engagement, especially in markets where trust and personal connection are key.

Where Hourglass Shines in a Brand Identity

Based on this project and similar explorations, Hourglass excels in specific roles within a brand identity:

  1. Logo Font: Especially for brands whose names are relatively short. It provides a memorable, distinctive signature.
  2. Accent Font: Used sparingly for headlines, product names on packaging, or special announcements to create focal points.
  3. Supporting Typeface for Print: In editorial design for magazines or brochures, it can be stunning for pull quotes and section titles.
  4. Digital Touchpoints: Website headers, key banner graphics, and social media campaign imagery benefit from its personality.

It’s a creative font that serves a clear professional purpose. It doesn’t look like a default system font; it looks like a deliberate, design-led choice, which in turn makes the entire brand identity feel more deliberate and cohesive.

Wrapping up that skincare project, the final brand materials—from the product labels to the website and social media templates—felt harmonized. The clean sans-serif kept everything legible and modern, while Hourglass provided those moments of sophisticated charm that made the brand feel special and inviting. It’s a testament to how a well-chosen script font, used with intention, can complete a visual identity, bridging the gap between minimalist professionalism and warm, human elegance.
